Minority Calls on President Akufo-Addo to Apologize for ‘Misguided Vote’ Comment During Volta Region Visit

The Minority in Parliament has issued a strong rebuke to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for his remarks made during his visit to the Volta Region, where he expressed sympathy for the residents affected by the recent spillage of excess water from the Akosombo Dam.

During his visit, President Akufo-Addo stated that he was there to offer his condolences to the affected residents, regardless of their voting affiliations, be it for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) or any other party.

However, the President’s comments have stirred anger and disappointment among the Minority, who have accused him of being insensitive and divisive.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, has called on the President to apologize to the victims for his “misguided statement.”

“It indicates that the government does not genuinely care for the people of the Volta Region. On behalf of the people of Ghana, the National Democratic Congress Minority in Parliament wishes to extend an apology to the people of the Volta Region for the statement made by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. We consider that statement very unfortunate, and it is not the kind of statement that should be made by the leader of the nation in times like these. It has taken us by surprise, and we are truly disappointed by the President’s statement. We urge him to apologize to the people of the Volta Region, especially for what he said,” he remarked.

In the meantime, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has also called on the government to provide compensation to the victims of the spillage.

“We came here to provide relief items to you and not to leave you in need. We believe that all the affected individuals will benefit from this support. We are of the opinion that the Volta Region Authority should have informed us in advance about the spillage. In some instances, the Volta River Authority should have ensured that the spillage was conducted in a way that did not affect communities and livelihoods. What we are urging the government to do now is to compensate those affected communities. Livelihoods, farms, and homes have been impacted, and we expect the government to address the compensation for the affected individuals,” Fifi Kwetey expressed.
