Microsoft Opens New $27 Million Tech Talent Hub In Nairobi Days After Unveiling Another Facility In Lagos

Microsoft has launched its new facility for its premier engineering hub in Dunhill Towers in Westlands, Nairobi, three years after operating in the country.

Microsoft said the new facility would serve as a premier hub for driving engineering and innovation. The centre is one of Africa’s largest software engineering facilities and sets the standard for a new generation of technology hubs.

The centre will provide opportunities for engineering talent and the Microsoft Garage, an incubation hub launched as part of the ongoing efforts to scale tech innovation on the continent. The building, which cost $27million, also boasts of self-heating windows, a mini solar plant to power the facility, and a water treatment facility to recycle and purify the water.

According to BusinessDaily, the facility has been built similar to Microsoft’s global offices to optimise space utilisation, air conditioning, and lighting adjustments as part of Microsoft’s global ambition to be net carbon negative by 2030.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, who unveiled the new facility at Dunhill Towers, Nairobi, in the company of other dignitaries, expressed optimism that the facility will bolster the government’s push to secure high-tech jobs in the digital space for the youth.

“As a premier centre of research and development for Microsoft, we all remain confident that you – together with our young men and women – will build a local world-class talent and create innovative technological solutions that will yield global positive impacts,” said President Kenyatta.

He added that the centre would create full-time time jobs for Kenyans in software development, programme management, technical design, content writing, operations, research and applied sciences as part of the mutually beneficial partnership between the Government and Microsoft.

Following the big news of the day that the world’s wealthiest man, Elon Musk, successfully purchased popular social media platform Twitter for a massive $44 billion, many were immediately wondering if disgraced former president Donald Trump would be returning to the platform…and he just gave an answer.

Shortly after the news of Twitter’s new owner was confirmed, Donald Trump made it very clear that he still has no plans to return.

@HuffPost reports, during an interview with FOX News following the confirmation that Elon Musk was officially the new owner of Twitter, Donald Trump assured his fanbase that despite the new ownership he will not be returning—choosing instead to use his own Truth Social platform that was launched back in February. “I am not going on Twitter, I am going to stay on Truth,” he said, before adding that he thinks that Elon Musk will likely “make improvements” to Twitter and stated that [Musk is] a “good man, but I am going to be staying on Truth.”

Trump wasn’t done with his comments and also took the time to claim that his platform is doing better than Twitter:

“We’re taking in millions of people, and what we’re finding is that the response on Truth is much better than being on Twitter. Twitter has bots and fake accounts, and we are doing everything we can. The bottom line is, no, I am not going back to Twitter. We want liberty and justice and fairness in our country, and the more we can have open, the better. I don’t view that [Musk’s Twitter] as a competition for what I am doing.”

 As we previously reported earlier today, after weeks of intense speculation, it was finally made official that Elon Musk would be the new owner of the company after purchasing it for $44 billion.

The list of companies that have suspended their services in Russia continues to grow. On Sunday, TikTok and Netflix joined the list. TikTok has not completely suspended the use of their app, but only certain features. While a rep for Netflix has confirmed that the streaming service has been suspended in Russia.

According to NBC News, on Sunday, TikTok announced, that they have suspended new content and live streaming abilities on their platform in Russia. The suspension is due to Russia’s new “fake news” law, which has now made it an offense to “disseminate what it described as ‘fake’ information about the country’s armed forces.” TikTok said in a statement, “In light of Russia’s new ‘fake news’ law, we have no choice but to suspend live streaming and new content to our video service in Russia while we review the safety implications of this law.”

They continued to say, “Our in-app messaging service will not be affected. We will continue to evaluate the evolving circumstances in Russia to determine when we might fully resume our services with safety as our top priority.”

However, when it comes to Netflix, their service has been suspended in the country. The Hollywood Reporter states that a Netflix rep said, “Given the circumstances on the ground, we have decided to suspend our service in Russia.”

Many major companies such as Disney and Warner Bros. have announced that they were pulling their films from the country due to the invasion.

As previously reported, earlier this week, Apple announced that it would suspend product sales in Russia, and limit the access to some of their digital services.

Apple Suspends Product Sales In Russia & Limits Access To Their Digital Services

As Russia continues to invade Ukraine, big corporations have been taking a stand to showcase their disapproval of their actions, and the latest to do so is Apple.

According to CNN, on Tuesday, the company announced that they have paused selling their products in Russia as they expressed their concerns about Russia’s invasion into Ukraine. They also said that they have limited access to their digital services, such as Apple Pay. The company has also limited the availability of Russian state media applications outside the country.

Apple said in their statement, “Last week, we stopped all exports into our sales channel in the country. Apple Pay and other services have been limited. RT News and Sputnik News are no longer available for download from the App Store outside Russia. And we have disabled both traffic and live incidents in Apple Maps in Ukraine as a safety and precautionary measure for Ukrainian citizens.”

Ukraine’s Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov also encouraged Apple to block access to their app store in Russia.

Apple’s decision comes on the heels of other companies, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, placing limits on sharing the news coming from Russian outlets. Netflix has also refused to air Russian state TV channels in the country.

As previously reported, Russia’s invasion into Ukraine first began last week when Russian President Vladimir Putin first announced that he “decided to conduct a special military operation” in order to protect the eastern region of Donbas in Ukraine. Since the start of the operation, the world has seen the effects of the mission, which has resulted in various casualties and has left civilians trying to flee the Ukraine in order to get to safety.
