The Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, has confirmed an agreement to release 262 acres of the Achimota Forest to its original owners, the Owoo family. This follows a previous decision to return 362 acres, which was later reduced to address environmental concerns.
The controversy began when President Akufo-Addo issued Executive Instrument 144 to reclassify the forest land for return to the Owoo family. After negotiations, 100 acres were retained to maintain the ecological integrity of the forest, leaving 262 acres to be returned.
Minister Jinapor explained that the decision to return the land dates back to the administration of President Mahama in 2013, with the current administration bound by this previous commitment. Despite the legal agreements, stringent measures have been put in place to protect the forest, ensuring that no land can be taken without meeting specific conditions.
