Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu Elected Acting Vice-Chairman Of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association

The Majority Leader in Parliament, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, has been elected by the Executive Committee of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) as the association’s acting Vice-Chairperson.

The election of the leader of government business in Parliament, who represented CPA from the African region, followed a poll between him and his sole contender, Mr Garry Brownlee from the CPA New Zealand branch.

The election was conducted via email in July 2021.

Appreciation

Communicating the outcome of the polls in a letter dated August 6, 2021, the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, Mr Stephen Twigg, thanked all members of the association who emailed and cast their votes during the election.

“The voting of the CPA Acting Vice-Chairperson was undertaken in accordance with Article 21(6) of the Constitution, which allows for an election of Acting Vice-Chairperson in the absence of a formal meeting, an election to determine the successful candidate with a simple majority vote will take place by an email ballot of the Executive Committee Members.

“The votes for the two candidates were counted and the results are as follows: Candidate A – Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu (Ghana) – 16 votes and Candidate B – Hon. Gerry Brownlee (New Zealand) – 6 votes,” he said.

Delight

He added: “As such, I am delighted to confirm that Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu from the CPA Africa Region has been voted by the Executive Committee to be the CPA Acting Vice-Chairperson.

“We look forward to welcoming Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu at the upcoming Executive Committee Meeting, taking place 27 – 30 September 2021,” Mr Brownlee said.

Mahama Pays Glowing Tribute To Ama Benyiwa Doe

Former President John Mahama has paid a glowing tribute to National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart, Ama Benyiwa Doe.

The NDC 2020 presidential candidate has described the latter as a true gender activist, following the news of her denise.

Mr Mahama made the remark in a post on Facebook, stating she was a champion of women’s rights.

To him, the former Central Regional Minister under the erstwhile Atta Mills administration was one of the most inspirational icons to have served NDC and Ghana at large.

He wrote: I have received, with deep sadness, news of the demise of one of the most inspirational icons to have served our party, the NDC, and this great nation.

She was not only a politician but also a gender activist and champion of women’s rights. Ama Benyiwa Doe was an embodiment of limitless courage, commitment, and passion for service.

May her soul rest in eternal glory.

The former minister and Member of Parliament (MP) died on Sunday, September 19, 2021, in Tema.

She was 73.

She was first elected into Parliament during the December 1992 general election on the ticket of the NDC as MP for the Gomoa West Constituency in the Central Region.

Chereponi Chairman Attacked by NPP Supporters Over DCE Nomination (Video)

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Chairman for the Chereponi district has been brutally assaulted by party youth following the release of President Nana Akufo-Addo’s list for the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executive (MMDCEs) Sunday.

A video circulating on social media shows the chairman being mobbed by the marauding party youth and subjected to severe beatings while some policemen make efforts to save him from the wild attacks with warning shots.

In a report filed by Kasapafmonline sighted by GhArticles.com, reports say the party office has been set ablaze amidst the tension.

Earlier on, police in a statement announced an intel regarding a demonstration set to be embarked upon by some members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) who were aggrieved that their favourite candidate, S.K. Orlando, was not recommended for nomination.

“The Chereponi District Police Command upon receipt of the information quickly invited the Chereponi constituency chairman, Aliu Suleman and some of the youth leaders and after discussing, the chairman and the youth leaders realized the need to keep the peace and abide by the advice of the police not proceed with the demonstration. They also promised to go by the Police Order Act and notify the police accordingly, should they intend to organize the demonstration.”

The police had also engaged S.K Orlando who was urged to calm his supporters down.

But the youth are unwilling to back down as tension escalates at Chereponi over the DCE nomination.

Hon. Dan Botwe Releases Full List Of MMDCE Nominees

The Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, Dan Botwe has released the list of nominees for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs).

Addressing a press conference on Sunday, Dan Botwe said the list has been forwarded to the Regional Ministers for the approval process to begin.

“They (Regional Ministers) are going to contact from tomorrow, Regional Directors of the Electoral Commission, get in touch with the Presiding Members of the various Assemblies and start the process of confirming Mr President’s nominees,” he said.

He also condemned the demonstrations embarked on by some party faithful following rumours that some MMDCEs have not been retained.

Mr Botwe stated that regardless of who has been chosen by the President, all MMDCEs, like other government appointees, have been selected to serve the community just like all others.

“Well-meaning Ghanaians know that we all are aspiring to serve our motherland and if an opportunity is not given at a particular time for you to serve there cannot be any reason whatsoever, why there should be a disturbance,” he added.
