Kenya’s Military Chief Among 10 Killed in Helicopter Crash

Kenya’s military chief, General Francis Ogolla, was among 10 individuals who lost their lives in a helicopter crash shortly after take-off on Thursday, according to an announcement by President William Ruto.

The helicopter, which had been on a mission to visit troops deployed in northwest Kenya to address ongoing cattle rustling, crashed just minutes after departing from Cheptulel Boys Secondary School in West Pokot County, Ruto disclosed.

Ruto stated that two soldiers survived the crash and were receiving medical treatment. An air investigation team has been dispatched to determine the cause of the accident.

“Our nation has lost one of its bravest generals,” Ruto expressed during a news briefing. “General Ogolla’s passing is a deeply painful loss… A distinguished four-star general has died while in the line of duty, serving his country.”

Ogolla, who previously served as the head of the Kenyan air force, was promoted by Ruto last year to lead the military, having also held the position of deputy military chief.

Ogolla joined the Kenya Defence Forces in 1984, where he underwent training as a fighter pilot with the United States Air Force and as an instructor pilot at the Kenya Air Force (KAF), as detailed in a profile by the Defence Ministry.
