John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has announced that first-year tertiary students will not be required to pay academic fees if he is elected president.
This proposal is part of a broader initiative aimed at reducing the financial burden on parents and students in pursuing higher education.
Speaking during the NDC’s manifesto launch on August 12, Mahama outlined his plan to implement a “no-fees stress programme” designed to alleviate the cost of tertiary education.
He emphasized that this policy would ensure that all Level 100 students would be exempt from paying academic fees.
In addition to the no-fees policy for freshmen, Mahama also mentioned plans to redeploy the Student Loan Trust Fund.
This would enable continuing students to access loans directly to cover their university fees, providing them with the financial stability needed to concentrate on their studies.
