The National Communications Authority (NCA) has declared that Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) will reconsider their strategies to potentially assign more data resources to crucial entities like the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), among others. This decision stems from discussions held with various stakeholders, including financial institutions, utility providers, and telecommunications companies, to address challenges posed by recent undersea cable disruptions affecting data services nationwide.
During the meeting convened at the NCA Tower in Accra, participants such as BoG, ECG, and other key organizations deliberated on mitigating the impact of connectivity disruptions on banking transactions and utility payments. Consequently, it was agreed that MNOs would explore options to prioritize and enhance data allocation to critical services amid bandwidth limitations. Collaboration with Subsea Cable Landing Service Providers is also underway to bolster internet data capacity progressively.
Furthermore, stakeholders proposed medium to long-term measures, suggesting the localization of essential services to ensure uninterrupted operations during significant disruptions. They emphasized leveraging local internet exchanges, including the Ghana Internet Exchange (GIX) and Accra Internet Exchange (AIX), for sustained service delivery.
Acknowledging ongoing efforts, the NCA highlighted that Subsea Cable Landing Service Providers and MNOs are actively receiving additional capacity from international partners, aiming for full restoration of data services. As more capacity becomes available, user experience is anticipated to improve gradually.
The NCA reassured the public of continued updates on developments regarding the undersea cable disruptions and their implications on data services.
