Policy think tank IMANI Africa and security analyst Professor Kwesi Aning have filed an injunction at the Supreme Court to prevent President John Dramani Mahama from dismissing the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, along with other heads of security services.
The legal action, filed on March 13, 2025, challenges the President’s authority to remove key public officers without proven misconduct. IMANI Africa and Prof. Aning argue that such dismissals should only occur in cases of established wrongdoing and that the President cannot make new appointments unless the current officeholders are deceased, incapacitated, or have resigned.
The motion, submitted at 11:00 AM at the Supreme Court Registrar’s office, seeks to restrain the Attorney-General, the President, and the governing councils of the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Immigration Service, National Fire Service, and Ghana Prisons Service from removing, terminating, or suspending their respective heads until a final ruling is made.
This legal challenge highlights the ongoing debate over executive powers and the constitutional limits of presidential authority in appointing and dismissing key security officials.
The Supreme Court has adjourned the case, giving the Attorney-General seven days to file a response.
