Sports journalist Saddick Adams has voiced concerns over the continued detention of 53 Democracy Hub protesters, arrested during last week’s anti-galamsey demonstration.
Speaking amid the ongoing three-day protest, which began on October 3, 2024, Adams questioned the rationale for denying them bail, especially since even serious crimes like murder can be bailable.
“If murder is bailable, why can’t we grant them bail?” he asked, citing the constitutional right that individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
Adams also called on President Akufo-Addo to heed the protesters’ calls to repeal laws that enable environmental destruction through illegal mining, or *galamsey*. He urged the Attorney General to address the situation and warned that such prolonged detentions could set a dangerous precedent, stressing that “it could happen to any of us.”
The three-day protest aims to bring attention to the severe environmental damage caused by galamsey and will end on October 5, 2024.
