Ghanaian musician Maradona Adjei Yeboah, widely known by his stage name Guru, has been elected as the president of the University of Ghana’s Students’ Representative Council (SRC).

Guru, together with his running mate Jeffery Adu-Yeboah, won the election with 50.7% of the vote, securing 9,455 votes in total out of the 18,659 ballots cast.

The election followed a tumultuous campaign season, characterized by disqualifications and legal disputes.

Guru had initially been disqualified by the SRC’s vetting committee on the grounds that he was a non-resident student, a status which allegedly disqualified him from contesting.

Another candidate faced similar disqualification, which led to a legal battle.

Last week, the University’s Appeals Board overturned the decision, ruling that both candidates should be allowed to contest.

The Vice Dean subsequently instructed the school’s Electoral Commission to reinstate the names of the disqualified candidates and their running mates, ensuring their participation in the election.

Despite the earlier challenges, Guru’s popularity among students carried him to victory, and his administration is expected to lead the SRC for the 2024/25 academic year.
