Government Releases GH¢80 Million to WAEC

The government has released GH¢80 million to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), according to Majority Chief Whip Frank Annoh-Dompreh. He informed Parliament that the Ministry of Finance disbursed the funds today, June 21, 2024.

The 2024 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) faces uncertainty as WAEC awaits nearly 98% of the GH¢95.83 million needed to organize the exam. So far, WAEC has received just GH¢2.3 million of the required amount.

The council has stated it needs at least 50% of the total funds to conduct the examination and additional releases to process and release the results. The BECE is scheduled to start on July 8 and end on July 15, 2024, at centers nationwide.

John Kapi, Head of Public Relations at WAEC, explained in an interview that although GH¢6 million has been processed through the Government Integrated Financial Management System (GIFMIS), it has not yet been converted into cash.

Mr. Kapi expressed concerns that the examination might not take place as planned if funds are not provided in time. Suppliers have delivered materials such as bond paper, printing consumables, answer booklets, pencils, and other stationery on credit, but are now hesitant to supply further materials for the upcoming West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) due to WAEC’s outstanding debts.
