The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has instructed Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong to continue serving as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast (UCC) while it investigates the circumstances surrounding his termination.

The directive came after UCC’s governing council announced on August 1 that Professor Boampong’s appointment, which was set to end on July 31, 2024, had been terminated. Although his initial four-year term had expired, an extension of two years was previously communicated. However, this extension was declared null and void by a notice signed by Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, the chairman of the university’s governing council.

In a statement issued on August 2, GTEC noted that they had not received any communication from the UCC Council contradicting the extension. Therefore, Professor Boampong should remain in his position until GTEC completes its review of the situation.

GTEC also requested the UCC management to provide all relevant documents related to both the renewal and the purported termination of Professor Boampong’s appointment. The Commission has set a deadline of Friday, August 9, 2024, for the submission of these documents, emphasizing the need to ensure the uninterrupted management of the university during this period.
