The government has averted a nationwide strike by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) by reassigning Samuel Adom Botchway from his role as Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.
The announcement was made by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, following CLOGSAG’s strong opposition to Botchway’s appointment.
CLOGSAG’s National Executive Council (NEC) had met on February 11, 2025, and expressed concerns over the appointment of politically exposed individuals to key civil service positions. They argued that Botchway’s appointment, which took effect on February 12, 2025, violated civil service neutrality. In response, the association threatened a nationwide strike beginning February 20, 2025.
However, in a February 14 statement, Kwakye Ofosu confirmed that the issue had been resolved.
“In the truest spirit of cooperation and understanding, we are happy to announce that the matter has been resolved and there will be no nationwide strike by CLOGSAG,” he stated.
The minister also acknowledged that the controversy surrounding the appointment of non-civil servants to such roles remains a pending legal matter.
“We have learned that the precedent set by the previous government in appointing a non-civil servant to that position remains before the courts,” he added.
He further reassured the public of the government’s commitment to dialogue and collaboration in addressing concerns of stakeholders.
“The Government of President Mahama remains committed to being a listening one as we work together to reset our nation,” he concluded.
The resolution of this standoff has prevented a major disruption in the country’s civil service operations.
