Ghana’s Commercial Transport Operators Announce 30% Fare Hike Effective January 22

Commercial Transport Operators across Ghana have officially declared a 30% increase in transportation fares nationwide, slated to take effect from Monday, January 22. The decision comes in response to mounting challenges, with operators pointing to substantial rises in the costs of lubricants, spare parts, and DVLA service charges.

In an official statement, the operators underscored the escalating expenses in the public transportation sector, emphasizing the strain on drivers who heavily rely on oil to ensure the efficiency of their vehicles. They attributed this pressure to the continuous surge in lubricant prices, influenced by fluctuations in global oil markets.

Additionally, the operators shed light on the escalating costs of spare parts, particularly for maintenance and repairs, which have significantly impeded their ability to keep vehicles in optimal condition. This predicament has resulted in decreased operational efficiency and increased periods of vehicle downtime, negatively impacting both drivers and the general commuting public.

Acknowledging the adverse effects of these challenges, the Transport Operators Association disclosed that they have engaged in extensive consultations with various stakeholders, including relevant state agencies and other transport associations. The primary goal behind proposing the fare increase, they asserted, is to alleviate the financial hardships faced by drivers and ensure the sustainability of Ghana’s public transportation industry.
