Ghanaian Government Pays Black Stars Supporters $400 Each in Ivory Coast After Threatening to Return Home

In an effort to address the grievances of over 300 Ghanaian supporters who travele to the Ivory Coast for the 2023 AFCON, the government has reportedly provided each fan with a $400 compensation. The decision came after the supporters expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of coordination and support from the organizing bodies upon their arrival.

Citing a report by Citi Sports, the compensation was initiated following the supporters’ threat to return home due to feeling neglected. Allegedly, officials engaged with the aggrieved fans, ensuring they were compensated to encourage them to stay and continue supporting the national team in Ivory Coast.

A journalist, speaking anonymously, confirmed the developments, stating, “There is good news. Yesterday after the story broke, around midnight, officials came and gave us what we were due.” The journalist further highlighted that similar compensations of $400 were received by supporters from various hotels, although uncertainty looms regarding whether this amount covers the entire tournament.

The compensation follows the disappointing performance of the Black Stars in their opening game against Cape Verde during the 2023 AFCON. Despite a comeback with Alexandre Djiku’s header, a defensive mix-up allowed Cape Verde to secure a late-game victory. This defeat adds to Ghana’s recent struggles, with just one win in their last six matches. The Black Stars now face Egypt in their second group game, aiming for a turnaround in fortunes.
