Ghana is gearing up to showcase its talent with a contingent of over 500 athletes set to participate in diverse disciplines at the forthcoming 13th Africa Games slated for Accra in 2024.
The Ghanaian delegation will vie for honors across a spectrum of sports including football, athletics, boxing, badminton, cycling, swimming, tennis, table tennis, and triathlon, among others.
Recently, Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, undertook a visit to Cape Coast, where Team Ghana has been diligently training across various sports in preparation for the event scheduled from March 8 to 23.
During the visit, Minister Ussif rallied the athletes, urging them to redouble their efforts in training to bring glory to Ghana at the continental games.
Addressing the press, Minister Ussif highlighted the substantial investment made by the government to ensure the successful hosting of the games, emphasizing the support provided for athlete preparation.
“On behalf of the President and all Ghanaians, I am here to motivate the athletes to push themselves harder so that they can excel and make Ghana proud,” he asserted.
Moreover, the minister called upon citizens to participate in this historic event by registering as volunteers, expressing delight at the overwhelming response received after opening the volunteer portal.
Furthermore, Minister Ussif appealed to Corporate Ghana to lend their support to the games by engaging with the Local Organizing Committee.
The athletes, who commenced their training camp in Cape Coast on January 9, will soon transition back to the University of Ghana, the Games Village, on February 8, to continue their preparations and assess the newly developed sporting infrastructure.
With an estimated 3,500 elite athletes representing 54 nations expected to compete, the 13th African Games will mark a significant milestone as Ghana hosts the event for the first time in its history.
