Ghana Receives First Batch of Modern Trains from Poland for Tema-Mpakadan Railroad

It has been reported that the first units of 12 modern trains from Poland have arrived in the country for operation on the Tema-Mpakadan railroad.

The trains left Poland in early February and were expected to arrive in Ghana mid-March but they arrived later than expected. However, the good news is that they are finally in the country.

These trains, part of a framework contract with Ghana Railways, are designed to operate both regional and long-distance lines.
The contract includes 12 diesel multiple units, with the option to order an additional 10 vehicles. The trains are technically similar to the RegioFox vehicles produced by Bydgoszcz for Czech Railways.

They will transport passengers from Mpakadan through Kpong, Juapong, Doryumu, all the way to Tema port. Passengers can then switch from the standard-gauge line to a narrow-gauge line to reach the heart of Accra.

The Tema-Mpakadan railway line, a 97 km standard-gauge railroad, is nearing completion, with about 98 percent of the work done. The line, scheduled to be completed in 2024, will facilitate the movement of goods and people along the Eastern corridor of Ghana. It forms part of a larger multi-transport system connecting the Tema port to the southern and northern parts of Ghana, including the inland port.

The Tema-Mpakadan railway line is also a crucial part of the planned 1000 km Ghana-Burkina Faso interconnectivity project, which aims to connect Ouagadougou to the Port of Tema. This development marks a significant step forward for Ghana in the transportation industry, promising improved connectivity and economic opportunities for the region.
