Asante Kotoko have secured a season sweep over their fiercest rivals, Hearts of Oak, following a 2-0 victory at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday in a match week 31 encounter of the Ghana Premier League.
In the first round, also played in Kumasi, Asante Kotoko triumphed 3-2.
Ugandan forward Steven Mukwala netted both goals in the match, having also scored twice in the first round.
Mukwala caught the Hearts of Oak defense off guard, skillfully controlling an overhead pass to score within nine minutes, as four Hearts of Oak defenders trailed him without contesting.
He sealed a remarkable performance with a stunning goal in stoppage time, picking up the ball just past the halfway line, dribbling into the Hearts of Oak box, cutting inside to his right, and unleashing an unstoppable shot.
This victory moves Asante Kotoko to ninth place with 43 points, while Hearts of Oak sit in 14th place with 38 points, just two points above the relegation zone.
Asante Kotoko’s next match is against Accra Great Olympics on Sunday, June 2, 2024, at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium for match week 32.
Hearts of Oak will face Nations FC at the Accra Sports Stadium on Friday, May 31, 2024.
