In a ceremony that marked the conclusion of a remarkable 40-year career in the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF), Vice Admiral Seth Amoama, Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), gracefully retired from military service. The traditional farewell parade and pull-out ceremony took place at the Burma Camp in Accra.
Adorned in a complete military ceremonial uniform, the departing CDS showed evident joy as he arrived at the parade grounds, where he received a warm welcome from senior military officers, both active and retired, leaders of various security agencies, government officials, family, friends, and well-wishers. Notable figures present included Deputy Minister of Defence, Kofi Amankwa-Manu, and several Members of Parliament.
Following the inspection of the parade and a general salute, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama was honored with gifts from individuals and institutions as a token of appreciation for his substantial contributions to the development of GAF and the nation. A citation highlighting his “outstanding leadership, uncommon patriotism, and epic professionalism” was also presented.
The symbolic act of handing over the command baton to Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah officially marked the successful transfer of authority, a pivotal moment in the transition. The ceremony concluded with a pull-out event, symbolizing the retirement of the esteemed officer, typically of higher rank.
Vice Admiral Amoama’s journey began in 1981 when he joined the GAF as a Naval Cadet, undergoing initial training at the Ghana Military Academy (GMA). Throughout his illustrious career, he held various significant appointments both at sea and on land.
Noteworthy among his roles was serving as the Commandant of the GAF Command and Staff College from July 1, 2016, to January 3, 2019. Before assuming the role of CDS, he held the position of Chief of the Naval Staff from January 8, 2019, to February 5, 2021, during which the Ghana Navy witnessed substantial development, including the unprecedented sailing of four Navy Ships to the Equator after a four-decade hiatus.
Elevated to the position of Chief of the Defence Staff on February 5, 2021, initially in an acting capacity and later confirmed as substantive on March 3, 2021, Admiral Amoama expressed gratitude to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for the trust and confidence vested in him. He credited the President for the significant support provided to GAF during his tenure.
In his retirement statement, Vice Admiral Amoama expressed fulfillment, retiring with distinction and dedication after serving the military with honor. He extended congratulations to Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, the incoming CDS, and acknowledged the collective strides made toward the growth and development of GAF during his term.
The outgoing CDS also expressed appreciation to his instructors, commanders, and mentors, recognizing the unwavering support he received throughout his military career. Reflecting on his time as CDS, he highlighted the tremendous backing and goodwill he enjoyed from all quarters.
