The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) has issued a warning that its members may also embark on a strike if the concerns of university senior staff are not addressed by the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) and Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC).
This announcement follows the recent indefinite nationwide strike declared by the Senior Staff Association of Public Universities in Ghana (SSA-UoG) and the Federation of Universities Senior Staff (FUSSAG) on January 17, 2024. The strike was initiated due to the government’s alleged disregard for the welfare of senior staff, specifically concerning the payment of the two-tier pension and overtime allowance.
GAUA expressed concern over what it described as the unilateral disregard of conditions of service and negotiation machinery by GTEC and FWSC, leading to directives that negatively impact university employees. The statement emphasized the need for the government agencies to respect conditions of service and negotiated outcomes to maintain industrial peace in public universities.
The association warned that any delays in resolving outstanding issues by GTEC and FWSC would prompt GAUA to join the ongoing strike action. GAUA also highlighted the diminishing patience among Ghanaian workers and stressed that the government’s inertia in addressing labor issues would no longer be tolerated.
“GAUA is monitoring closely the issues on the labor front at this time and will not hesitate to activate its advertised intentions if the government fails to address issues in the nation’s public universities in a timely manner, bearing in mind the critical issues plaguing GAUA as a body,” the statement concluded.
The ongoing strike has impacted various university services, including healthcare, administration, and security, affecting final-year students in practical sessions that require supervision from senior technicians.
