Five Arrested Following Shooting at Ramadan Event in Philadelphia

In West Philadelphia, five individuals have been apprehended and multiple firearms seized following a shooting incident on Wednesday afternoon.

The gunfire erupted around 2:30 p.m. local time at Clara Muhammad Square, where families, children, and elderly individuals had gathered for Eid al-Fitr, the Islamic celebration marking the end of Ramadan.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel confirmed the arrests and firearm recoveries during a news briefing after the incident.

He stated that the shooting occurred when two groups in the park began exchanging gunfire.

Police officers intervened and detained three males and one female suspect who were fleeing the scene, recovering four weapons in the process.

According to witnesses, chaos ensued as the shots rang out.

Najah Bey, attending the event, recounted how she and others fled in panic, searching desperately for their loved ones.

She described the scene as people running, screaming, and taking cover, with some sustaining injuries, including her cousin who was shot in the stomach.

Another eyewitness, Thomas Allen, expressed dismay over the incident occurring during a religious celebration and involving young individuals.

Allen, who is involved in a non-profit initiative to steer youth away from violence, emphasized the need for more efforts to guide and develop young people.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene following the shooting.

One person was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the stomach, while a juvenile was treated for a gunshot wound to the hands.
