A devastating fire outbreak ravaged parts of the Dome market, decimating at least fifty shops in its wake. The incident, occurring late on Sunday, January 7, 2024, around 9:30 pm, prompted a swift response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Speaking to Citi News, ADOII Alex Nartey from the GNFS Public Relations Department disclosed that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. He highlighted the challenges faced by the firefighters, citing the market’s congestion as a major hindrance to their efforts. Despite the difficulty in accessing the affected area, the team managed to control and extinguish the fire by 3:30 am, averting potential casualties.
Nartey stressed the obstacles encountered due to obstructed pathways, forcing the firefighters to park at a distance and manually transport hoses to the fire scene. Nevertheless, their concerted efforts prevented approximately $500 worth of property damage, although around 50 shops fell victim to the blaze.
