Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially taken the oath of office as the new Member of Parliament for the Ablekuma North constituency. The swearing-in ceremony was conducted on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, by the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
The event was not without controversy, as it was preceded by a walkout staged by the Minority Caucus. The protest was triggered by the Speaker’s refusal to grant a request from Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, to make a statement before the oath was administered.
Aubynn’s inauguration follows a hotly contested parliamentary rerun in 19 polling stations within the Ablekuma North constituency. The Electoral Commission ordered the rerun after annulling the results of the December 2024 general elections in the area, citing multiple irregularities. Issues raised included the submission of unauthenticated pink sheets, unsigned result forms, and inconsistencies in vote tallies during the collation process.
In the rerun held earlier this month, Aubynn emerged victorious with 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Akua Afriyie, who polled 33,881 votes.
Her win not only shifts the political dynamics in a traditionally NPP stronghold but also strengthens the NDC’s presence in Parliament. The Ablekuma North seat is now seen as a symbol of the NDC’s growing appeal in urban constituencies.
Aubynn is expected to focus on uniting the constituency and addressing key development challenges, including infrastructure, sanitation, and youth employment.
