The European Union (EU) has unveiled plans to roll out a Private Sector Development Programme aimed at tackling youth unemployment in Ghana, following the approval of a funding deal worth 50 million Euros with the Ministry of Finance.
Recent statistics from the Ghana Statistical Service reveal that more than 7 percent of the nation’s young population remains unemployed.
During the 2023 Youth Employment and Entrepreneurship Global Forum held in Accra, Martha Briyoni, the Programme Manager responsible for employment and education at the European Union Delegation to Ghana, highlighted the imperative of aligning the country’s employment initiatives with the Sustainable Development Goals.
“Significant EU investments are being directed towards enhancing skill development for quality employment opportunities and fostering the growth of the private sector. We are on the verge of launching a support programme for private sector development,” Briyoni stated emphatically.
She further revealed, “The programme boasts a budget of approximately 50 million Euros. We’ve recently finalized the financing agreement with the Ministry of Finance, and preparations for implementation are in full swing for the coming year.”
