Former Minister for Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, has shed light on his role in securing the release of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi.
Dr. Acheampong personally submitted documents to serve as one of the two justified sureties required for Wontumi’s GH¢50 million bail, resulting in his release from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on Monday, June 2, 2025.
Speaking to journalists shortly after the release, Dr. Acheampong emphasized that his intervention was rooted in party solidarity and moral duty.
“It serves us no good. What is important is that one of us was in trouble,” he stated. “He was arrested, and we needed, as part of the legal process, to provide surety for bail, which has been done. He has been released, and now we wait for the next steps.”
Chairman Wontumi was arrested on May 27 and transferred to EOCO amid investigations into allegations including fraud, money laundering, and causing financial loss to the state. He was granted bail on May 28 with strict conditions, including the provision of two justified sureties.
Though his legal team reportedly satisfied the bail terms by May 30, his release was delayed due to a motion filed at the High Court seeking a review of the bail conditions. That motion was withdrawn on June 2, paving the way for his eventual release.
Deputy Attorney General, Justice Srem-Sai, has hinted that ongoing investigations could potentially reveal links between Wontumi and an international organised crime syndicate.
Despite these serious allegations, Chairman Wontumi’s legal team maintains his innocence and has pledged full cooperation with investigators.
