The Member of Parliament for Daboya-Mankarigu in the Savannah Region, Mahama Shaibu, has disclosed that Ghana is on the verge of a major shift in how Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) are approved.
According to the MP, who also serves as the chairman of Parliament’s Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, the current system where Assembly Members vote to confirm presidential nominees for MMDCE positions is set to be scrapped.
Speaking during the confirmation of Mr. Abdulai Nashiru as the District Chief Executive (DCE) for North Gonja, where the nominee received a unanimous endorsement, Mahama Shaibu announced that Parliament is working on a bill to enable the public to directly elect MMDCEs.
“This may be the last time we will be endorsing a DCE through Assembly Members,” he declared. “I can confirm, as Chairman of the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, that a bill is already being drafted to change this process.”
He further emphasized that the proposed law would empower citizens to vote for their local government leaders in the same manner as Members of Parliament, signalling a move toward deeper local-level democracy.
