Andre Onana Joins Cameroon Camp for AFCON After Club Commitment Delay

Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has officially reported to the Cameroon camp for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the Ivory Coast. The 27-year-old, who delayed his appearance for the tournament due to club commitments, engaged in talks between the English club and Cameroon to ensure his availability for the recent draw with Tottenham Hotspur, which ended 2-2.

Following the game at Old Trafford, Onana promptly jetted off on a private jet from Manchester to commence his 4,800-mile journey to the Ivory Coast. Despite his arrival, the former Ajax shot-stopper will not be available for Cameroon’s AFCON opener against Guinea on Monday, January 15.

Having retired from international duty last year following disagreements with Cameroon coach Rigobert Song during the 2022 World Cup, Onana later rescinded his decision and expressed his readiness to represent his country in the future.

Onana’s late arrival raises questions about his starting position in Cameroon’s AFCON group games, with uncertainty surrounding his participation in the upcoming matches. The Indomitable Lions find themselves in Group C, alongside Senegal, Guinea, and the Gambia, as they embark on their journey in the prestigious continental tournament.
