The government has announced that all sanitary pads distributed through the Free Sanitary Pad policy will be sourced exclusively from local manufacturers, with no imports permitted. This move aims to strengthen domestic production and support the local industry.
President John Dramani Mahama issued the directive, which was shared by Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu via Facebook on Wednesday, June 18, 2025.
“Minister for Education: President directs that ALL sanitary pads under the Free Sanitary Pad policy be procured locally. No import whatsoever allowed,” Ofosu stated in the post.
The Free Sanitary Pad policy forms part of the government’s broader initiative to enhance menstrual hygiene among schoolgirls, reduce school absenteeism, and promote gender equity in education.
As part of efforts to expand access and cut production costs, the government is also reviewing a proposal to establish a sanitary pad manufacturing facility within the Ghana Prisons Service.
“Proposal under review to set up a sanitary pad manufacturing firm in Prisons,” Ofosu added.
In a related development, Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has revealed that GHS 7 million has been allocated to pay the tertiary education fees of Persons With Disability (PWDs), further underscoring the government’s commitment to inclusive education and social support.
