President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called for significant reforms within the United Nations Security Council, highlighting the need for a fairer global governance structure. Speaking at the UN Summit on the Future of the World on Tuesday night, he emphasized the outdated nature of the current Security Council.
“In its current form, the [Security] Council does not reflect the realities of today’s world. It remains an outdated post-Second World War relic, with Africa, a continent of 1.4 billion people, grossly underrepresented,” Akufo-Addo stated.
He stressed that true multilateralism cannot exist under an unjust and unequal system and urged for bold reforms that would give all nations, regardless of size or wealth, an equal voice.
President Akufo-Addo is expected to deliver his final address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, September 25, where he will address issues such as climate change and other global developments.
