In a gesture of compassion and support, the Ahmadiyya Muslim Lawyers Association, Ghana (AMLAG), stepped in to restore freedom to six inmates at Navrongo Central Prisons in the Upper East Region. These individuals had been imprisoned due to their inability to pay fines ranging from GH₵3,000.00 to GH₵6,000.00 each, following convictions for various offenses in 2023.
As part of their Humanitarian Service Project, AMLAG not only covered the fines for these inmates, but also extended their generosity by donating food items, specifically bags of rice, and providing an additional amount of GH₵1,000.00 to support the remaining inmates’ welfare.
Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali, President of AMLAG, highlighted that this initiative aligns with the Ahmadiyya Muslim community’s call to utilize their professional expertise for humanitarian aid, emphasizing the importance of reintegrating these individuals into society for nation-building purposes.
Dr. Ali stressed the significance of the court’s decision to impose fines, indicating that it implies the potential usefulness of these individuals in society. He expressed AMLAG’s commitment not only to legal aid for the vulnerable but also to collaborating with various stakeholders in the legal system to uplift society.
Maulvi Quaye, the Upper East Regional Mission of AMLAG, emphasized that incarceration presents an opportunity for inmates to learn and emerge as better citizens, urging them to devote themselves to God and embrace reformative activities.
Jaladeen Abdulai, an AMLAG member, advised the newly freed individuals to steer clear of activities that might lead them back to prison and instead focus on constructive endeavors to reshape their lives positively.
The Assistant Deputy Director of Prisons, Yakubu Ibrahim Abugrago, expressed gratitude to AMLAG, noting that their intervention not only reduces prison overcrowding but also offers these individuals a chance to reintegrate into society and contribute meaningfully to the nation.
Emmanuel Kose, one of the freed inmates, conveyed appreciation to AMLAG and prison officials for the lessons learned during their time in incarceration. He pledged to refrain from engaging in criminal activities in the future.
