Didier Deschamps to Step Down as France Manager After 2026 World Cup

Didier Deschamps has announced that he will step down as France’s national team manager after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, marking the end of an illustrious 14-year tenure.

Deschamps, who took over the reins in 2012 following Laurent Blanc’s departure, led France to their second World Cup victory in 2018. Under his leadership, Les Bleus also reached the finals of the 2022 World Cup and the 2016 UEFA European Championship.

In a preview of an interview with TF1 and LCI, Deschamps confirmed his decision:
“I’ve been here since 2012 and am scheduled until 2026. It will stop there because it has to stop at some point. In my head, it’s very clear,” he said.

Despite his remarkable success, Deschamps has faced criticism for his conservative tactics, with some fans believing he underutilized France’s attacking prowess. Nevertheless, his achievements include a 64.2% win rate and leading France to the semi-finals in four of the six major tournaments he oversaw.

Legacy of Success

Deschamps is one of only three individuals to have won the FIFA World Cup as both a player and manager, joining Mario Zagallo of Brazil and Germany’s Franz Beckenbauer.

Before managing France, Deschamps had a successful coaching career at Monaco, Juventus, and Marseille. He guided Monaco to the 2003-04 UEFA Champions League final and led Juventus back to Serie A following their relegation due to the Calciopoli scandal. He also delivered Marseille their first Ligue 1 title since 1995.

Who Will Replace Him?

Zinedine Zidane, Deschamps’ former teammate and a legend in his own right, is widely regarded as the favorite to take over. Zidane, who led Real Madrid to three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles, has been out of coaching since 2021.

Hugo Lloris, France’s captain under Deschamps, praised his manager as an “inspiration to the players,” citing his calm demeanor and wealth of experience.

Deschamps leaves behind a legacy of stability and success for a national team that had previously been prone to high-profile tournament disappointments, including early exits in 2002 and 2010.

As the 2026 World Cup approaches, all eyes will be on Deschamps to see if he can cap his tenure with one final triumph on football’s grandest stage.
