Osei Owusu Backs Afenyo-Markin for Minority Leader in 9th Parliament

The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei Owusu, has publicly endorsed Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Effutu MP, for the role of Minority Leader in the 9th Parliament.

Osei Owusu urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) leadership to recognize Afenyo-Markin’s deep understanding of parliamentary procedures and his leadership acumen, which he argued are essential for navigating the anticipated National Democratic Congress (NDC) majority in the next Parliament.

Highlighting the importance of experience, the Bekwai MP drew parallels with the tenure of Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who excelled in leadership roles due to his steady progression in Parliament.

“I strongly believe in longevity and experience from our own actions and inactions. When Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu served as Minority Leader and Majority Leader, he stood out clearly. That wasn’t by accident—it was a result of starting as Chief Whip and growing into the role. If you ask me, let Alexander Afenyo-Markin continue,” Osei Owusu remarked.

Following their loss of the parliamentary majority in the December 7 elections, NPP Members of Parliament will occupy the Minority benches when the 9th Parliament is inaugurated on January 6, 2025.
