Mahama Pledges Two-Day Eid-ul Fitr Holiday for Muslims if Elected

John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the upcoming 2024 elections, has promised to introduce a two-day Eid-ul Fitr holiday for Ghana’s Muslim community if elected as president.

During a campaign stop in Gambaga and Nalerigu in the North East Region on October 2, 2024, Mahama highlighted the difficulties some Muslims face in fully observing the holiday due to the moon’s sighting, which can affect when the celebration takes place. To resolve this, he pledged to add an extra day to ensure all Muslims can rest and celebrate regardless of when they break their fast.

Mahama also reaffirmed his commitment to fostering unity, understanding, and fairness for all Ghanaians, regardless of faith, as part of his vision for the country.

He additionally criticized the current government for abandoning projects initiated under his administration and promised to complete those projects and revive the country’s economy if elected.

This promise follows a recent initiative by Francis-Xavier Sosu, MP for Madina, who proposed a bill in December 2023 to amend Ghana’s Public Holidays Act, aiming to introduce two additional Islamic public holidays: Tashreeq (after Eid-al-Adha) and Shaqq (before Eid-ul-Fitr).
