Residents of Gyetiase and Tadiaso, farming communities in the Sekyere Central District of the Ashanti Region, have protested against poor road infrastructure, accusing successive governments of neglecting their needs. The poor road network, according to the protesters, has made it difficult for residents to access healthcare services in Asante Mampong and Nsuta.
Teachers and healthcare workers often refuse to be posted to these communities due to the bad roads, further worsening the situation. The protesters have threatened to boycott the December 7, 2024 elections and prevent voting in their areas unless their roads are fixed.
Prince Dwomoh, a leader of the protesters, told Channel One News that despite informing local authorities, including the District Chief Executive, Member of Parliament, and Assembly Member, no action has been taken to address their concerns. He stated, “Our roads have been unconstructed since Ghana’s independence in 1957. We are tired, and until the roads are constructed, we will not participate in the 2024 elections.”
The protest comes at a time when the government is implementing its District Road Improvement Programme, aimed at upgrading local roads, though the residents of Gyetiase and Tadiaso feel they have been left out.
