Samia Nkrumah Declares Bid for Jomoro Seat as Independent Candidate

Samia Nkrumah, a former Member of Parliament for the Jomoro Constituency, has announced her intention to contest for the parliamentary seat as an Independent Candidate in the upcoming election. This marks her return to active politics after more than a decade since leaving the legislature.

Ms. Nkrumah, who previously served as an MP on the ticket of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), stated that her decision to run independently stems from a desire to move away from the highly partisan nature of Ghanaian politics. She emphasized that her campaign will focus on putting the interests of Ghana first, rather than being driven by party loyalty.

“I am running as an independent to re-enter parliament, the Jomoro constituency, and independent means putting Ghana first, fighting the extreme partisanship that has not delivered to our people. So independent, the independent card, I believe is a new way of doing politics, where you are ready to work with others to make sure that good things happen for your people. I don’t want us to be extremely partisan,” Ms. Nkrumah stated.

She explained that her political ideology, rooted in the Nkrumaist tradition, resonates with a broad spectrum of Ghanaians, making her choice to run as an independent a strategic move.

Samia Nkrumah first entered parliament in 2008 after defeating the then-incumbent Lee Ocran. In her announcement, she urged constituents to reconsider the entrenched two-party system, which she argued has failed to deliver meaningful progress for the people.
