Residents of Denu in the Ketu South Municipality have expressed their frustration with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), threatening to stop using electricity if their grievances over high tariffs are not addressed.
Israel Bossman, the Assembly Member for Denu, stated that the community feels burdened by exorbitant monthly electricity bills, which they believe do not reflect their actual consumption. The situation has led to rising tensions, with residents recently staging a protest to demand a review of the billing system.
In an interview with Citi News, Bossman called for immediate action, describing the current billing system as a form of extortion. He urged the ECG to stop disconnecting customers and fix the flawed billing mechanisms.
“I understand that people now take loans to pay light bills, and this is not pleasant. A time is coming when nobody would want to use electricity anymore because we can’t continue paying these amounts. Something is wrong somewhere,” he remarked.
In response, Eunice Tweneboah-Kodua, the Public Relations Officer for the ECG in the Volta Region, assured residents that their concerns have been addressed. She acknowledged that while the residents have raised the same issues repeatedly, the ECG is committed to resolving them.
Despite the ECG’s assurances, the residents remain dissatisfied, with many still considering further demonstrations if the situation does not improve. The standoff continues as the community awaits a resolution to what they see as an unfair and unsustainable electricity billing system.
