Tema General Hospital Responds to Viral Video of NICU Power Outage, Says it Was a Brief Generator Trip-off

The Tema General Hospital has issued a statement in response to a viral video circulating on social media, showing its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in darkness during a power outage. The hospital clarified that the incident was a brief generator trip-off and that no lives were lost as a result.

According to Dr. Richard Anthony, the medical director at the facility, the power outage occurred on Tuesday, March 26, when the hospital was relying on its power plant due to an interruption in power from the national grid. He confirmed that the dedicated generator set to the NICU tripped off for a short period, but the hospital’s electricians were able to restore power to the unit within two hours.

The video sparked controversy on social media, with many users speculating that it was a major disconnection by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) due to a debt owed by hospitals to the power distribution company. However, the hospital’s statement clarified that the outage was due to a technical issue with the generator and not a disconnection by ECG.
