Nigeria: Explosion in Ibadan Creates Panic, Residents Flee for Safety

In a tumultuous event on Tuesday around 8 p.m., the city of Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, was engulfed in confusion following an explosion that reverberated through various neighborhoods. Residents were caught off guard, scrambling to find safety as uncertainty loomed.

The cause and precise location of the explosion became subjects of conflicting accounts among residents. Some characterized it as a tremor, while others speculated on possibilities such as a gas explosion or an improvised explosive device blast. Numerous areas, including Eleyele, Ologuneru, Owalla, Ekerin, Isokan, Apete, and sections of the University College Hospital (UCH), experienced the impact, with reports of shattered windows.

Gbaremu, Mokola, Bodija, Oke-Itunu, Basorun, Akobo, and Sango were also among the affected regions. Notably, structures such as the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Oyo State House of Assembly, and the late Bola Ige’s former residence faced damage. Roads were deserted as residents took refuge indoors, and some victims were admitted to hospitals, including UCH.

Dejo Olugbodi, a resident, suggested that the explosion might have originated near Dejo Oyelese area, behind the secretariat, recounting the damage to houses and injuries witnessed.

The government, through Commissioner for Information and Orientation Dotun Oyelade, issued a statement acknowledging diverse interpretations of the explosion without a confirmed cause. Nevertheless, reassurance was provided that the state government was managing the situation, with security agencies deploying personnel to contain any fallout.

Oyo State Police Public Relations Officer Adewale Oyefeso confirmed the explosion around Dejo Oyelese street, Bodija, Ibadan, at approximately 7:44 p.m., though the cause remained unconfirmed.
