The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has taken the unprecedented step of suspending all league matches following a shocking incident where a referee was physically assaulted by MKE Ankaragucu’s president, Faruk Koca. The appalling incident occurred after a high-stakes Super Lig match between Ankaragucu and Caykur Rizespor ended in a contentious 1-1 draw, prompting Koca to charge onto the field and strike referee Halil Umut Meler.
TFF Chairman Mehmet Buyukeksi declared an indefinite suspension of all league games, condemning the attack as a disgraceful night for Turkish football. Meler, a distinguished 37-year-old referee with international accolades, suffered several blows, including a minor fracture, as chaos erupted on the pitch involving players and club officials.
The aftermath saw both Meler and Koca receiving hospital treatment, with Koca to face detention procedures upon completion of medical care, as stated by Turkey’s Minister of Internal Affairs, Ali Yerlikaya. Authorities have arrested others involved in the incident.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan denounced the assault, emphasizing that sports symbolize peace and unity, affirming a zero-tolerance stance towards violence in Turkish sports.
Expressing remorse, MKE Ankaragucu issued an apology, acknowledging the regrettable nature of their president’s actions. Meanwhile, Caykur Rizespor conveyed support for Meler and condemned the post-match events.
TFF’s Buyukeksi emphasized the non-violent nature of sports, urging collective responsibility and promising severe punishments for Ankaragucu and its management. The TFF plans to deliberate on penalties starting Tuesday, aiming to ensure a safer environment for Turkish football.
Galatasaray, a prominent club, called for an emergency meeting to address the escalating issue within Turkish football. Additionally, the Association of Active Football Referees and Observers of Turkey urged referees to abstain from officiating matches, asserting solidarity with Meler and the entire referee community.
The Turkish Super Lig Professional Football Clubs Foundation also condemned the assault, pledging collective efforts to prevent future violent incidents in football.
The TFF’s decision to suspend league activities reflects a concerted effort to address the alarming incident and its implications, aiming to restore the integrity and safety of football in Turkey.
