There is concerning news emerging from our Senior High Schools (SHS) regarding the growing use of “wee toffees” among students. The usage of these substances is becoming more prevalent, and it’s causing alarm within the educational community.
Prince Kofi Yeboah, the mental health coordinator for Bongo District, reports a significant increase in the number of students from senior high schools who have experienced mental health issues, including what some describe as “going crazy” during their WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination) papers. Upon closer examination, it has been discovered that this erratic behavior is linked to the consumption of wee toffees, which are essentially candies infused with marijuana.
Shockingly, some students believe that these wee toffees can enhance their cognitive abilities, allowing them to perform exceptionally well in their exams. This misguided belief has led to a surge in their usage among students.
It’s important to note that wee toffees are made using marijuana, a psychoactive substance. This worrying trend not only jeopardizes the health and well-being of students but also raises serious concerns about the integrity of the education system and the need for increased awareness and intervention to address this issue.
