According to Suhuyini, the position of Agyapong as chair of the Defense Committee as well as recent unpopular comments associated with him warrants that Parliament takes action against him [Agyapong].

The Speaker in referring Agyapong to the Privileges Committee said, “The House’s attention is drawn to the conduct of one of our members and under Order 27, which I want to quote says: notwithstanding anything contained in these orders, Speaker may refer any question of privilege to the committee of privileges for examination, investigation, and report.”

Bagbin said, “In spite of the word notwithstanding, the Speaker in giving his discretion may request any question of privileges. I think that’s why the Honourable Member is seeking my intervention to refer the matter to the Privileges Committee.”

He added: “This is my first time hearing this matter. As it is now, I am compelled to refer it to the Privileges Committee. It’s a matter the Privileges Committee will have to go into and then report to the House and it is for us to decide whether the Honorable Member is contemptuous of the House.

“In the circumstance, I direct that this matter be directed to the committee of privileges for investigation and report, I so direct.”
Bagbin also cautioned MPs to be mindful of their conduct and also emphasized the limitations of the privileges they enjoy.

Ghana's Debt Levels Topping 80% of GDP; Unsustainable - Mahama Laments

Former President John Mahama says Ghana’s debt has got to unsustainable level due to government’s reckless expenditure to win elections.

“This government must accept that it is their mismanagement of the economy, their thirst for consumption expenditure and the desire to spend beyond our means in order to win elections that have plunged us into the current crisis, not necessarily COVID-19.

“This has led to rampant increments in the prices of goods and services. This is primarily responsible for the hardships Ghanaians are going through now,” Mr Mahama wrote on twitter on Saturday morning.

He added: “Our debt has ballooned to unsustainable levels- topping 80% of GDP- exposing us to very high risk of debt default. Almost all of our tax revenue is used to service our debt and the effect has been the introduction of several new taxes”.

NPP Charges Supporters To Accept List Of MMDCEs

The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) is asking stakeholders, particularly supporters, to accept the yet-to-be-published list of Chief Executive Officers for the various Municipalities and Districts.

The party believes acceptance of the list is a sign of respecting the President’s decision.

Director of Communication for the NPP, Yaw Buaben Asamoa, charged the members to welcome the nominees and ensure a smooth confirmation process for them.

“We expect party executives at grassroots to accept the list to be released in good faith. Every nominee on that list is a nominee of the President, therefore, you must respect the choice,” he explained.

He argued the nominees will represent the President at the local level and must be given full support.

“Their work impacts on the whole nation, so the approval process impacts all of us that’s why we are asking the party to own the process,” he said.

He also admonished the nominees to open up and welcome divergent views in the discharge of their duties.

“We expect nominees to open up and welcome all shades of opinion. We don’t expect successful nominees to have a closed-door administration. We don’t expect the nominees to shut out people who contested with them,” he added.

Kennedy Agyapong To Consider Running For President If.........

Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong has disclosed that he will consider becoming a president if Ghanaians clamour for it.

He, however, indicated that he is content with what he is doing as a lawmaker because one does not have to be a president to help people.

“I have a personal belief that you don’t have to be a president to effect change in people’s life,” he said in an interview in the US.

“I’m not a president but you can see the things I’m doing to help Ghanaians.

“That alone is enough but if a time comes that Ghanaians feel that you can lead and make a change, I will give myself some time and consider it. I don’t want to rush.”

Already, the maverick politician has announced his intentions not to contest for the Assin Central parliamentary seat in 2024.

He said nothing will move him to change his mind this time around, having backtracked in 2016.

“Even if I’m given 1,000 cows, I will not go back because I want the people to know that I am fighting for their wellbeing and not myself as an MP.”
