Isaac Adongo, the Member of Parliament for Bolgatanga Central, has taken a swipe at the Minority caucus in Parliament for their swift return to parliamentary proceedings after staging a protest demanding the release of NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi.
On Thursday, May 29, some Minority legislators marched to the headquarters of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) in Accra to demand Wontumi’s release. He was being held over alleged financial improprieties related to the Ghana Export-Import Bank (EXIM Bank). The protest caused significant traffic congestion and required a strong police presence.
Wontumi had been arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Tuesday, May 27, and later handed over to EOCO. Although he was granted bail on Wednesday, May 28, with a GHS50 million bond and two justified sureties, the conditions had not yet been met.
Despite their strong stance during the protest, Minority MPs returned to Parliament the following day, Friday, May 30, signaling the end of their boycott.
During proceedings in Parliament on that day, Adongo openly mocked his colleagues, stating that Wontumi would be disappointed to see them back in Parliament instead of standing by him. “Wontumi will be very sad that you’re here talking. He expected you to spend the night at EOCO with him,” he said.
He further added, “You promised Ghanaians that you were boycotting Parliament, but now you’re back debating for more holidays. Tell Wontumi his people are deceiving him.”
Adongo also recounted how the protesting MPs had vanished by 7 pm the night of the demonstration, despite initially sitting on the ground in solidarity.
In a related development, it has emerged that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the NPP’s 2024 flagbearer, is reportedly spearheading efforts to meet Wontumi’s bail requirements.
