President John Dramani Mahama has called for greater decentralization in the management of Ghana’s education sector, advocating for more authority to be given to district education directors.

Speaking at the presentation of the National Education Forum Report on Thursday, June 5, the President emphasized that it is ineffective for the Ghana Education Service (GES) in Accra to manage schools located in remote areas.

He argued that empowering district directors would help curb teacher absenteeism and prevent the continued payment of salaries to teachers who have left their posts.

Mahama also called for a change in the current teacher recruitment process. He proposed that vacancies be declared and filled at the district level, rather than being centrally managed from Accra.

“Why do we sit in Accra and recruit teachers? Vacancies must be declared at the district level,” he remarked, highlighting that local authorities are better positioned to assess their staffing needs and oversee personnel.

He concluded by suggesting that teachers should apply directly to the districts where they intend to work, ensuring better alignment between recruitment and actual needs on the ground.
