The Methodist Church Ghana has responded to reports of a Supreme Court suit involving Wesley Girls’ High School (WGHS), firmly denying allegations that the school discriminates against students of other religious backgrounds.

In a press release issued on November 28, 2025, the Church—proprietor of the school—said it became aware of the case filed by Shafic Osman against the school’s Board of Governors, the Attorney-General, and the Ghana Education Service through media reports. Although it has not yet been formally served, the Church confirmed that steps are being taken to access the official documents to guide its legal response.

The statement highlighted WGHS’s long history, noting that since its establishment in 1836, the school has delivered holistic education to girls irrespective of race, creed, religion, or background. It pointed out that students from Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Jehovah’s Witness, and even atheist backgrounds have passed through the institution.

Addressing claims that the school engages in discriminatory practices because it receives government support, the Church clarified that while WGHS is government-assisted, its Methodist identity remains constitutionally protected.

It added that the school’s traditions and systems are designed to promote unity, discipline, and order, and allowing separate practices for different religious groups could create segregation and undermine school cohesion.

The Church referenced a 2024 Memorandum of Understanding developed by major religious bodies, the National Peace Council, and other stakeholders to guide peaceful coexistence in mission schools.

The Presiding Bishop, Most Rev. Prof. Johnson K. Asamoah-Gyadu, reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to fairness, strong values, and respect for all faiths, and stated that the Methodist Church remains open to dialogue with stakeholders to foster peace and understanding as discussions on the matter continue.
