The Electoral Commission (EC) has refuted claims in a viral video suggesting that a voter register was being transported in a white pick-up truck. The register in question, labeled “Ahafo Ano South-East, 1&2,” was disowned by the EC in a statement released on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
Deputy Chairman Samuel Tettey clarified:
“The Voters Register shown in the video is not that of the EC. The Commission’s registers are black and white and not coloured as shown in the video.”
The EC explained that final registers are provided to political parties, which then print their own versions for party agents. The Commission also pointed out that the truck seen in the video is not part of its fleet.
The EC urged the public to disregard the video, describing it as an attempt to create mistrust. They called on the Ghana Police Service to investigate the matter, emphasizing that the truck’s registration number could aid in identifying those involved.
This development comes on the heels of the EC’s decision to burn over three million presidential and parliamentary ballot papers for the Eastern and Western Regions due to the leakage of a single defaced ballot paper. The papers were destroyed on Tuesday, December 3, 2024.
Following the reprinting of new ballot papers, a special voting exercise in the affected regions is scheduled for Thursday, December 5, 2024.
