In an effort to show appreciation for the dedication and hard work of volunteers at the 13th African Games, the Local Organizing Committee has announced a cash incentive of GH₵1,200.00 for each volunteer. This decision, made in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, aims to recognize the significant contributions of volunteers to the success of the tournament.
The total payment of GH₵1,200 includes GH₵1,000 allocated as incentives for volunteering and GH₵200 designated for transportation. Prior to this announcement, some volunteers had already received GH₵200 as their transportation fee to return home after the conclusion of the tournament.
To claim the benefits owed to them, volunteers are required to provide the necessary proof, as outlined in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu Asare.
The decision to provide this compensation comes after a dispute between volunteers and officials. Allegations were made that officials had withheld their allowances of GH₵2,000 each, in addition to their promised transport fare of GH₵500 each. This conflict escalated, resulting in volunteers being reportedly ejected from their accommodation on the day they expected to receive their funds.
The provision of GH₵1,200 as a cash incentive for volunteers reflects a positive step towards acknowledging and valuing their efforts in ensuring the success of the 13th African Games.
