Volunteers Clash with Officials Over Unpaid Allowances After Conclusion of 13th African Games

Tensions rose at the University of Ghana campus as volunteers of the 13th African Games clashed with officials over unpaid allowances and unfulfilled promises. The volunteers, numbering about 3,000 and comprising both foreign nationals and Ghanaians, alleged that officials had failed to honor their agreement of GHC2,500 per person, which included GHC500 for transportation and GHC2,000 as allowances.

The dispute escalated when officials reportedly forcibly evacuated the volunteers from their hostels, prompting them to leave for their respective homes. Expressing their disappointment, one volunteer lamented, “We the Volunteers for the 13th African Games have been denied our due including TNT and are being forced to leave the Hostels immediately.”

Despite assurances from officials, the volunteers were informed to vacate the hostels without receiving their due compensation. An anonymous volunteer confirmed the incident, stating, “We have been denied our allowances, the situation here is sad. Colleagues are disappointed.”
