The University of Cape Coast branch of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG-UCC) has strongly criticized the University Council’s decision to terminate Professor Johnson Nyarko Boampong’s appointment as Vice-Chancellor.
UTAG-UCC has denounced the Council Chair’s action as unilateral and invalid, asserting it violates ongoing legal proceedings that prevent the Chairman and Council from making such a decision.
“The letter from the Council Chair dated July 31, 2024, announcing the termination of the Vice-Chancellor’s renewed term, lacks propriety and merit. The claims that the renewal violates the University’s Statutes and Constitution are baseless.
“The renewal process adhered to all legal and statutory requirements. Consequently, the Council Chair’s action is arbitrary, capricious, and legally unfounded. We categorically reject it.”
Professor Boampong’s four-year term as Vice-Chancellor concluded on July 31, 2024, but his appointment was supposedly extended by two years. However, the Council Chair, Professor Harold S. Amonoo-Kuofi, declared the extension null and void, stating that a decision on the extension is pending.
On Thursday, August 1, 2024, UTAG-UCC called on the Council Chair to retract the termination letter, accusing him of acting in bad faith and making unilateral decisions detrimental to the university’s governance.
The Association urged the government to revoke the Chairman’s appointment and assured the university community that it is closely monitoring the situation and will take necessary actions to protect the institution’s integrity and its members’ rights.
UTAG-UCC emphasized the importance of the University Council strictly adhering to the legal and statutory frameworks governing the university, warning that any actions contrary to these frameworks would be met with resistance to uphold justice and fairness.
