The University of Ghana has debunked claims by lawyer Moses Foh-Amoaning that it has amended its statutes to permit LGBTQ+ activities on campus.
The allegations, published by GhanaWeb on November 21, 2025, stemmed from comments he made on Onua FM’s “Yɛn Nsempa” programme. He alleged that the University Council, led by the Vice-Chancellor, altered the statutes to accommodate transgender and LGBTQ+ activities and said his coalition wrote to the University for clarification but received no response.
In a statement issued on November 24, 2025, the University described the claims as false, misleading and defamatory. It clarified that the 2024 review of its statutes introduced no provisions that endorse LGBTQ+ activities. The only adjustment involved replacing gendered pronouns like he, she, him and her with gender-neutral terms such as they and their, a standard linguistic update widely used in academic, legal and even religious texts, including the 2011 NIV Bible.
The University provided an example showing how a clause previously using “his or her” was revised to a gender-neutral structure without changing meaning or policy direction.
The institution also confirmed that it had responded to the coalition’s enquiry in a letter dated November 10, 2025, contrary to Mr. Foh-Amoaning’s public claim.
Management condemned what it described as an unnecessary personal attack on the Vice-Chancellor, noting that no Vice-Chancellor has the authority to change University statutes alone. It demanded a full retraction and a public apology, warning that it would take legal action if the false statements were not withdrawn.
The University urged GhanaWeb, Onua FM and other media platforms to verify information before publication, cautioning that the spread of unverified claims misleads the public and harms institutional credibility.
Despite the controversy, the University reaffirmed its commitment to ethical governance, academic excellence and maintaining a lawful, safe environment for all members of its community.
