The University of Ghana has officially ended its partnership with Mulch Company Limited, the managers of the Legon Botanical Gardens. The Gardens, located on the Haatso-Atomic road in Accra, have been co-managed by the university’s Department of Botany and Mulch (formerly Pine Springs Company Limited) since 2009.
The Legon Botanical Gardens is a popular recreational space offering activities such as canopy walking, high rope courses, canoeing, bird watching, and a children’s playground. However, on October 11, 2024, Mulch Company Limited tweeted that the Gardens would close on October 30, 2024, without specifying if the closure was temporary or permanent.
In response, the University of Ghana issued a press release on October 12, 2024, explaining that Mulch Company had failed to meet its contractual obligations over the years, prompting legal action. Following negotiations and legal proceedings, the university regained control of the Gardens, and Mulch has agreed to cease operations by November 30, 2024.
Dr. Elizier Taiba Ameyaw-Buronyah, Director of Public Affairs, confirmed that the university plans to maintain and improve the Gardens as a space for beauty, research, and recreation. The Gardens will undergo repairs and reopen to the public, fulfilling its role as an important green space.
